- Use fentanyl test strips ($1-2 per strip, widely available)
- Dissolve small sample in water per strip instructions
- One line = POSITIVE (fentanyl detected, do NOT use)
- Two lines = NEGATIVE (no fentanyl detected above threshold)
- Invalid test = Start over with new strip
Important Limitations: Fentanyl test strips detect many (but not all) fentanyl analogues. Novel analogues may not trigger positive result. Strips are screening tools, not definitive tests. When in doubt, avoid use or send to lab for GC/MS testing.
Carry Naloxone (Narcan): If using any powder or pressed pill, have naloxone nasal spray available. It reverses opioid overdoses within 2-5 minutes and is legal to possess without prescription in most US states, Canada, UK, and EU countries. Available free from many harm reduction organizations.
